The Ryder Cup is hyping us all up for a French travel connection while golf fashion and industry encounters invoke fond memories. In the beginning of my ‘90’s golf days Izod Lacoste stood out in stores as one of the few options for cute ladies’ sportswear. A decade later French LPGA pro Karine Icher came to our Butthead Covers’ booth at the PGA Merchandise Show and asked if we would give her gator head covers for her bag because she represented Izod and that was her logo. We said, “Sure.” She had a nice accent. Soon after, the gators were dancing down the Corning Classic fairway drawing attention from the commentators on TV. It was like having our kid on tour.

Fast-forward and another French pro was introduced to us via fellow travel writers in Spain. They thought we might assist Celine Herbin with lodging when playing on the Symetra Tour at Longbow Golf Club. She already had a place to stay but came to the house for dinner with her caddie and really liked our Antigua Wear. So we hooked her up with CEO Ron McPherson who sent her a wardrobe and she loved the styling and performance of her outfits. Antigua luck, her world-renowned coach and caddie, Vicente Ballesteros, as well as of course her great skill and attitude won Celine the French Open. Lacoste was watching and made a better deal for her to don their gator logo apparel. As she says, “I loved Antigua, but what can I do, I am French?”

The female version of the Ryder Cup is the Solheim Cup, which was played this year in the French named town Des Moines, Iowa, USA where Cutter and Buck outfitted the European team. Antigua again dressed the winning USA team in red, white and blue starred style, perhaps ironically clothing the Captain, Julie Inkster who is sponsored by Cutter and Buck and pro Cristie Kerr who is sponsored by LaCoste. Antigua? Oui, oui!
