Ball manufacturers usually conduct field testing of new premium balls using PGA Tour staff professionals. This time however Titleist decided their latest prototype should be tested by recreational players giving them the opportunity to be part of the development of a new ball.

The EXP-01 (EXP for experimental) has been manufactured in limited quantities an is in retailers now or they may be ordered on Titleist.com.

“The EXP Project invites golfers into the early stages of our R&D process, and allows us to broadly test experimental materials, constructions and processes that could be integrated into any segment of our golf ball line,” said Michael Mahoney, Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball Marketing. “EXP-01 is truly an exploratory product and there’s no better way to evaluate our progress than getting it into the hands of dedicated golfers.”

The company hasn’t released much information concerning the performance characteristics of the EXP-01, leaving that to the feedback from players. The facts we do know place it in the same category as Titleist’s other premium balls, three-piece multi-layer construction with urethane cover similar to the Pro V1 and the AVX but with fewer dimples—346 versus 352. The Titleist Pro V1x is four layers with just a 328-dimple cover.
