McGirt First Win at Memorial—Nordquist Defends Shoprite LPGA
Tour players playing TaylorMade Golf are all aware the company, along with sister brands Ashworth and Adams, has been put up for sale by parent adidas but that didn’t seem to effect William McGirt and Anna Nordqvist. Both won playing TMaG’s M2 driver.
McGirt’s is set at 8.5 degrees loft with a Fujikura Speeder Evolution 661X shaft while Nordqvist dials it in at 9.5 degrees and uses a Mitsubishi Rayon Diamana 60 stiff shaft.
McGirt won the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, his first PGA Tour title, in a two hole playoff over Jon Curran at Muirfield Village Country Club in Dublin, Ohio, on a course designed by tournament host Jack Nicklaus. The 36-year old McGirt is a native of Lumberton, North Carolina and prior to this win his best he had done was three seconds on Tour the most recent being a T-2 in the Sanderson Farms Championship last November.
Nordqvist in taking her second in a row Shoprite LPGA crafted an impressive 64 on Sunday at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club near Atlantic City, New Jersey. It is her sixth win on the Tour since she started in 2009.
The M2 driver is part of TaylorMade’s “M Family” that includes the M1 models and both have a carbon fiber crown and an adjustable hosel. But while the M1 ($500) has a “T-track” sliding weight arrangement on the sole to adjust ball flight tendency the less expensive M2 ($400) does not. It uses TaylorMade’s Speed Pocket design in the sole, a slot behind the clubface for added flex at impact. Both the M1 and M2 have a carbon fiber crown rather than one of titanium and since that saves weight TMaG designers were able to reposition weight to the sole and place it towards the rear of the head to help create a higher launch.
