1Last weekend saw redemption for Jordan Spieth after his implosion on the second nine the last day of the Masters and for Rocco Mediate who had his first win on the PGA Tour Champions in three years and his first career major, the Senior PGA Championship.

In Spieth’s case the win at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational in Fort Worth at fabled Colonial Country Club was his eighth trophy on Tour and the first in his home state since turning professional. Colonial is known as “Hogan’s Alley” because Ben Hogan won on the course five times during his career including his final victory the 1959 Colonial National Invitational.

Spieth didn’t overpower Colonial but he did outscore veteran Harris English with a short game that might have been vintage Phil Mickelson, especially his wedge play. To illustrate, Spieth put it away Sunday making long birdie putts on the 16 and 18 and an almost unbelievable hole out for birdie from over the 17th green. When not being spectacular the young Texan was just short of amazing. If his approach wasn’t on the putting surface he averaged 6 ½ feet to the pin on shots from around the green. And he had lots of opportunity since he wound up the week 99th in greens in regulation.

The four wedges Spieth carries are all Titleist Vokey SM6 models starting with 46-degrees then 52, 56 and 60. The 46 and 52, both with 8 degrees of bounce, have an F grind which is good for a variety of turf conditions while the 56 (10 degrees bounce) is an S grind with more of a beveled trailing edge. The 60 has 4 degrees of bounce and Vokey’s L grind with a relatively narrow sole to really get the ball up quickly.

The rest of Spieth’s all-Titleist bag include:

Driver: Titleist 915D2 (9.5-degrees) with an Aldila Rogue Limited Edition Black 60TX shaft

3 Wood: Titleist 915F (15-degrees)–Graphite Design Tour AD-DI 7X shaft

3-Iron: Titleist 716 T-MB–Graphite Design Tour AD-DI 105X shaft

4-9 Iron: Titleist 714 AP2–True Temper Project X 6.0 shafts

Putter: Scotty Cameron 009 Prototype

Ball: Titleist Pro V1x

2Mediate held off Colin Montgomery over the difficult Harbor Shores course in Benton Harbor, Mich. for a three shot win making two birdies in the last four holes. The clincher though was his holed bunker shot on the par-3 17
th allowing him a cushion for the final hole.

The affable Pennsylvania native said the key to the week was his short game which helped him to a Senior PGA first round score of 62 and a fourth round 66. Mediate is on the PXG staff and his three wedges are their 0311T model 48-degree plus the PXG 0311 model 51-degree and 56-degree. All have AeroTech Steel Fiber 110X shafts and the Xtreme Dark finish, a very hard carbon coating to make the surface harder and more resistant to wear.

Mediate also plays the Titleist Pro V1x ball and his clubs are:

Driver: PXG 0811 (9-degrees) with Aldila Rogue Black 70X shaft

3-Wood: PXG 0341 (15-degrees)–Aldila Rogue Black 70X shaft

5-Wood: PXG 0341 (18-degrees)–Aldila Rogue Black 70X shaft

22-Degree Hybrid: PXG 0317–Aldila Rogue Black 85X shaft

4-9 Irons: PXG 0311T Xtreme Dark–AeroTech Steel Fiber 110X shafts

Putter: PXG Drone
