Not since Angelo Spagnolo– tagged the world’s worst golfer who shot 257 for 18 holes at TPC Sawgrass including a score of 66 on the island green 17 th 30 years ago —has a golf round been so dissected, analyzed and commented on as that of Tiger Woods upon his return to competitive golf at the Hero World Challenge. Though Woods didn’t win the charity event played over the Albany Golf Club course in the Bahamas (he finished 15 th in a field of 17), his showing was respectable as the tournament proceeds benefited the Tiger Woods Foundation.
Since his last tournament appearance in August 2015 Nike Golf, the equipment company he has been paid to endorse, quit the club and ball business causing Woods and several other high profile players to start searching for new equipment.
Besides ditching his Nike putter and reverting to the old Scotty Cameron he used to win 13 of his 14 major championships Woods settled on a TaylorMade driver which is not much of a surprise since it is the most played driver on Tour. World number one and number three, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson use it plus it posted the most wins on Tour in the 2015-2016 season.
It was no surprise Woods stayed with the Nike VR Pro irons that he had previously used as well as the VR Forged wedges.
What was somewhat surprising was Woods playing with the Bridgestone B330S ball rather than the more popular Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x. He felt the Bridgestone ball better matched his swing and it is used by several other top players such as Matt Kuchar, Bryson DeChambeau and Brandt Snedeker. The B330S is a urethane cover 3- piece construction with their dimple-within- a-dimple design specifically for players with over 105 mph driver swing speed.
