DJ’s Second Straight Win For PGA Tour

Dustin Johnson didn’t play last week at the Honda Classic but the one week layoff following his win in the Genesis Open, which put him atop the world golf rankings, didn’t seem to effect the steady South Carolinian. He won Sunday the WGC-Mexico Championship at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City by one stroke over Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and by two over rookie phenom Jon Rahm and another Englishman, Ross Fisher.

Johnson now has the second largest number of WGC championship trophies with four. Tiger Woods has 18.

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson pumps his fist after birdieing the 8th hole during the final round of the WGC-Mexico Championship Sunday.

DJ, who is on the TaylorMade Golf staff, kept the same clubs in his bag for both wins including the TaylorMade M1 460 2017 driver he began using at the Genesis and the five-layer TP5x ball. This is the third win of the 2016-2017 season for the TP5/TP5x which is also being used by former world number one Jason Day, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia.

Aside from his putter, and he putted extremely well finishing in a tie for fifth in putting for the week, the key to this win for the exceptionally long Johnson was his M1 2017 3HL 3-wood set to 16-degrees of loft. The shaft is one inch shorter than standard making it the same as a normal 5-wood. He reports he can carry it 280 yards, just the distance he says he wants in a 3-wood.

Due to his length, the 7,800 foot altitude and the tight layout of the Chapultepec course Johnson used his driver sparingly and relied on the 3-wood or irons from the tee. Still he managed to be fourth in driving distance for the week averaging 321.5 yards.
