Pat Perez had been sidelined since February with a shoulder problem that required surgery but the 40-year old took the time necessary to rehabilitate properly. In his second start since returning—the sixth tournament of the new season—he won the OHL Classic Mayakoba at 21 under par, two strokes clear of third round leader Gary Woodland.
Perez, in a post round interview, said he played aggressively the entire day enabling him to post a 4-under par round over the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleon course.
His only other win on the PGA Tour came seven years ago at the Bob Hope Classic in Palm Springs.
For his 3-iron through 5-iron Perez used a game improvement model by PXG. The 0311XF irons are forged from carbon steel with a cavity behind the steel face that is filled with a thermoplastic elastomer to dampened vibration. The blade shape is slightly longer and the sole is has been made wider for a forgiving design that incorporates 10 tungsten weights in the rear of the clubhead along the lower part and toe to properly position the center of gravity.
Perez switches to the PXG 0311 model for his 6-iron through 9-iron. These are constructed similarly to the XFs starting with an open cavity forging that is CNC milled, filled with elastomer with a maraging steel face plasma welded on. The head is smaller than the XF model and has less offset. All his irons have KBS Tour S+ 125 shafts.
Clubs from three other OEMs complete his bag.
