FedEx Cup Playoffs Winning Gear

The PGA Tour is on a one week break before the third FedEX Cup playoff event, the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in suburban Chicago with Dustin Johnson as the defending champion. The top 70 on the points list tee it up for the privilege of being among the top 30 moving on to the East Lake Golf Club finale and the $10 million FedEx Cup prize. The BMW Championship is sponsored by the Western Golf Association and was formerly the Western Open which was first played in 1899 making it the oldest tournament on the PGA Tour after the U.S. Open.

In Case Anyone Should Ask: Equipment used by the top ten players in the FedEx Cup standings going in to the last two weeks pretty much reflects the way it has been all season and in fact, for the past several seasons. TaylorMade wins the driver count with five of the top ten, Titleist and Callaway have two players each while Cobra has one. Ball preference is also predictable with two TaylorMade devotees, one Srixon and the other seven playing Titleist.

Tour Edge: Another Tour Edge Exotics brand club is out, the CBX Iron-wood with a high strength ‘L’ cup face with the idea of giving users the performance of a hybrid with the feel and workability of a traditional forged iron. There will be a choice of four lofts: 2 (17 degree), 3 (19 degree), 4 (22 degree) and 5 (25 degree). Suggested retail is $200 and a limited edition Black Pearl finish is on the way as well at a price of $250.

TaylorMade: TMaG has released details of the M CGB irons, a direct extension of the successful M1 and M2 lines introduced last season. CGB, which stands for Center of Gravity Back, are for use by players who have slower swing speeds and want a super game-improvement iron. All the boxes are checked from the Taylormade-pioneered flexing slots on the face and sole to repositioning the Inverted Cone feature on the inside of the face slightly toward the toe for more draw bias. The cavity back of the M CGBs is a 360 degree undercut and there are four tungsten weights lined up along the rear of the sole to produce better launch conditions. An eight iron set with steel shafts is $1,200 and you can add $100 if you want graphite shafts.

Callaway Epic Star: The much anticipated follow-up by Callaway of their bestselling Epic driver has been announced called the Epic Star, which has been available in Japan for at least a year. Besides the driver there’s a whole family of Epic Stars, from fairway woods through irons and all are built with the goal of providing top flight performance in an premium priced lightweight package. The Epic Star driver ($700) has the Jailbreak Technology of the original Epic, i.e., two titanium bars inside the club head behind the face to convert energy from the usual flexing of the crown into a more responsive face plus they incorporated the drag reducing crown ridges called Speed Step. Everyone knows a lighter weight club can be swung faster so the Epic Star has a 39-gram shaft, a 41-gram grip, reduced crown weight to 9.7 grams, an 11-gram sliding sole weight saving 6-grams from the Epic and they saved 7 grams by using a non-adjustable hosel. The result is a club weighing in at 286-grams or about 25 grams less than the first model Epic.

PXG v. TaylorMade Golf: Bob Parsons, founder and CEO of Parsons Xtreme Golf, posted on his personal Twitter account Sept 12, “Taylormade Golf’s new P790 irons infringe upon many PXG patents. Sued them in Federal court today!” Presumably this has to do with the fact PXG’s three iron models use a thin faced hollow body with a structural thermoplastic elastomer. TMaG’s P790s also are a hollow cavity design with something tagged as “SpeedFoam” inside.
