Well-wishers may return those toasters they bought online at Harrods.com because Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki — contrary to a rash of rumors — are not engaged just yet.
The tennis-playing half of sports’ power couple Wozzilroy sparked a spate of speculation that golf’s No. 1 had popped the question over Christmas when she arrived in Australia on Thursday sporting a rock the size of Gibraltar on her left ring finger. Turns out, however, sometimes a diamond is just a diamond, as a spokesperson for the reigning Deutsche Bank champ sought to quell the gossip about any pending nuptial.
“On behalf of Rory McIlroy I would like to confirm that he has NOT become engaged to Caroline Wozniacki as was originally reported in Australian press,” read a statement, according to The Journal. “Rory is in Australia to support Caroline before he heads in January to Abu Dhabi.”
Wozniacki alighted the plane that carried the cozy couple Down Under for the upcoming Brisbane International and Australian Open tennis tourneys displaying a rather large diamond and sapphire band on her left hand. With Danish women typically wearing wedding and engagement rings on their right hands, however, the 10th-ranked tennis star may have just wanted to brandish a little bling that Santa may or may not have left under her tree.
Known for her pranks, Wozniacki refuted reports last month that she and McIlroy were ready for the altar.
“Can’t believe you started rumors like that!” Woz tweeted to Sascha Bajin after Serena Williams’ hitting partner tweeted congratulations about her big news. “Not engaged yet, but you’ll be the first to know if we do!;) hehe.”
