Massachusetts PGA Tour Players

Norton, MA — Three MGA stalwarts have earned their 2010 PGA Tour cards — believed to be the most ever Bay State natives for a single season. Kevin Johnson, the 42-year-old former Massachusetts Junior Amateur, Massachusetts Amateur and Massachusetts Open champion who played on the 2001 PGA Tour, returns after finishing 13th on the 2009 Nationwide Tour, including wins at the The Rex Hospital Open and Knoxville Open. Fran Quinn, the 44-year old 1990 MGA Open champion, finished 25th on the 2009 Nationwide Tour, including a win at the Albertson’s Boise Open. James Driscoll, the 32-year-old two-time Massachusetts Amateur champion, finished 112th on the 2009 PGA Tour to retain his card; he first earned his PGA Tour card in 2005. His best finish in 2009 came in May when he finished second to Zach Johnson at the Valero Texas Open. While those three players (shown above from left: Johnson, Quinn and Driscoll) look forward to the 2010 PGA Tour season, several other Bay Staters are still eyeing a chance at joining them. Advancing to the third and final round of PGA Tour Qualifying earlier this month were 2009 Massachusetts Open Champion Rob Oppenheim (Orlando, FL) and the 1998 Richard D. Haskell MGA Player of the Year Justin Peters (Stuart, FL). Peters, a Plymouth native who made national headlines in 2003 when he won The Golf Channel’s Big Break competition. posted a score of 10-under par 274 at Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach (FL) to finish fourth and earn one of the 20 qualifying spots and ties. Firing a qualifying score of 10-under par 278 at the Callaway Gardens-Mountain View Golf Course in Pine Mountain (GA) was Oppenheim, who earlier this year made history by becoming only the sixth player to capture both the Massachusetts Amateur and Massachusetts Open titles. Included in that impressive list of champions are Francis Ouimet, Jesse Guilford, Charles Volpone, Jim Hallet, Kevin Johnson and now Rob Oppenheim The final stage of PGA Tour Qualifying will be held on December 2-7 at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach (FL). http://www.pgatour.com/qschool/index.html
