New Bedford native Peter Uihlein posted -5/67 Saturday in the third round at the Turkish Airlines Open to move onto the first page of the European PGA leaderboard just four shots off the lead behind Victor Dubuisson of France and Jaco Van Zyl of South Africa in at -16/200.
Choosing to play the European Tour, Uihlein started the 2013 season in the Challenge Tour category, (counterpart to the Web.Com Tour), but a victory in the Madeira Islands Open improved his exemption to full European Tour Membership. He finished the season 14th in The Race to Dubai and was the recipient of the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year honor.
A successful collegiate career at Oklahoma State University, Peter reached number one in world amateur rankings and won the 2010 US Amateur Championship on his 21st birthday.
Struggling a bit, Uihlein’s play has shown improvement of late, most specifically his greens in regulation, (GIR), percentage. Last week at the UBS Hong Kong Open he posted scores of 70, 70, 66, 66 to finish -8/272 and a T-13th. Uihlein has three Top 10 fishes so far this year on the European circuit and has climbed to 48th in the Race to Dubai, (European Tour’s version of the FedEx Cup), through the Hong Kong event.
Peter is the son of Wally and Tina Uihlein. Father Wally, from Haverhill, has been Chairman and CEO of the Acushnet Company since 2000. Located in Fairhaven, Acushnet’s most popular product brands include Titleist golf balls, Footjoy shoes, Scotty Cameron putters and Vokey wedges.
A member of our Team New England contingent, Peter Uihlein will make a great addition to the PGA Tour when he decides to ‘come home’.
