Jan 25: Annika Sorenstam speaks during the 2017 PGA Merchandise Show

PGA President Paul K. Levy will get a “helping hand” from World Golf Hall of Famers Annika Sorenstam and Colin Montgomerie, and from 2016 PGA Golf Professional of the Year Cary Cozby in officially opening the 2017 PGA Merchandise Show – The MAJOR of Golf Business – today at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC).
The foursome will welcome attendees from all 50 states and 90 countries, ceremoniously opening the doors to three days of merchandising, product testing, sourcing, networking and educational seminars featuring 1,000 leading companies.

With Golf Channel telecasting “Morning Drive” live from the OCCC today, Day One of the PGA Show is dedicated to charity and philanthropy, while focusing on technology.

One of the great values that sets golf apart from all other sports is its historical commitment to charity,” said Levy, the 40th PGA President. “Golf gives back.”

Sorenstam’s Annika Foundation teaches youngsters the importance of healthy living and an active lifestyle through fitness and nutrition.

Montgomerie’s Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation raises money for cancer patients and their families and funds two cancer centers. Cozby, PGA head professional at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2004.  He has since introduced a golf marathon event that has generated $750,000-plus for local cancer patients and their caregivers.

Sorenstam, Montgomerie and Cozby are joining World Golf Foundation CEO Steve Mona and Michelle McGann today on the PGA Forum Stage presented by OMEGA to discuss “The Impact of Charitable Efforts in Golf” at 10 a.m. PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua and Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack will also appear.

Numerous PGA Education Conference seminars continue today in classrooms downstairs at the OCCC, while the Performance & Sports Textile Sourcing Education Program Stage in the Apparel Hall, Golf Fitness, Wellness & Instruction Stage, Equipment Test Center, New Product Zone, Golf Travel Pavilion and Inventor’s Spotlight are other PGA Show floor hot spots.

The far-reaching charitable impact of golf and technology are today’s themes for special presentations, panel discussions and celebrity conversations on the PGA Forum Stage presented by OMEGA, located in the Equipment Hall at the front of Aisle 400.

World Golf Foundation CEO Steve Mona will share details of a new WGF report on the “Impact of Charitable Efforts in Golf” at 10 a.m.

A panel comprised of charity-minded individuals such as Annika Sorenstam, Colin Montgomerie, Michelle McGann and 2016 PGA Golf Professional of the Year Cary Cozby will also be on hand. Plus, PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua and Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack will make a special announcement.

“The charitable impact of golf is profound,” says Mona. “Of the four major team sports in the United States (hockey, football, baseball and basketball), golf generates more charitable dollars than all of them combined.”

On the technology front, a panel discussion titled “How Technology and Digital Content Connect You to the Golf Consumer” is set for 11 a.m., while  Bevacqua and guest host/College Football Hall of Famer Lou Holtz will join two-time Senior PGA Champ Montgomerie and Bubba Watson for a special SiriusXM “State of the Game” discussion at noon on the PGA Forum Stage presented by OMEGA. A “Conversation with Bubba Watson” presentation will follow at 1 p.m.

A special Q&A session with Cobra Puma Golf CEO Bob Philion and Greg Norman begins at

4 p.m. The session will be followed by a special charitable presentation by Philion to Folds of Honor founder Major Dan Rooney, a PGA Professional and former F-16 fighter pilot.
