When Rory McIlroy raised his arms in triumph after securing a two-shot victory at the World Tour Championship in Dubai on Sunday, the world No. 1 brandished a Titleist Scotty Cameron GSS putter — for the last time.
Acushnet, maker of the flat stick and the rest of the gear in McIlroy’s golf bag, captured the superstar’s curtain call for posterity in a press release.
“Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy capped a memorable 2012 campaign with a two shot victory at the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship,” the statement read. “It was a dramatic finish for the world’s top ranked player who closed with five consecutive birdies for a final round six under par 66 and a 23-under 265 victory total.”
It was also a bittersweet juncture for the Massachusetts golf manufacturer that has been the equipment supplier of choice for McIlroy since he turned professional in 2007. The 23-year-old won two majors and secured his stature as the best golfer on the planet with Titleist sticks. But starting January 1, he’ll take his considerable skills from Fairhaven to Beaverton (Ore.) and hope to continue his world domination tour as Tiger Woods’ stablemate at Nike.
Despite the October announcement that McIlroy would not re-up with Acushnet when his contract expires at the end of the year, the company took one final bow with the kid many of his peers believe to be Woods’ heir apparent.
Here’s what was in McIlroy’s bag for his fifth worldwide win of the year and 10th of his career:
- Driver: Titleist 913D3 (8.5 degrees)
- Fairway metals: Titleist 913 Fd (13.5, 18 degrees)
- Irons: Titleist MB (3-9)
- Wedges: Vokey Design SM4 (46, 54, 60 degrees)
- Putter: Scotty Cameron GSS
- Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
