The field of the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas started with the top 64 players available in the World Golf Rankings and wound up with Bubba Watson taking the trophy in a runaway 7 and 6 victory over Kevin Kisner. Watson endured a two year stretch of poor golf to win at the Genesis Open in February and with the Match Play trophy is now a favorite for the Masters.

Watson plays Ping woods and irons and had switched back to the Titleist Pro V1x in November from the Volvik S-4 which he had played since January of 2017.

His trademark pink-shafted and accented Ping driver is the G400 and it is getting lots of attention from both Tour players and recreational golfers. The cast titanium body is designed in what Ping calls “Dragonfly Technology” from the similarity to the look of a dragonfly’s wing. The clubface is a thin forging of titanium and there’s a tungsten back weight to increase the MOI. The head shape was modified to improve aerodynamics and there of course are Ping’s turbulators, crown vanes, to reduce drag.

Bubba uses the G400 LST (low spin) model meant for players with higher swing speeds and there are also standard and SFT (anti-slice) models.

Garnett Wins First in Dominican Republic

In the regular Tour event played opposite the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, Brice Garnett got his first win by in 88 starts. The four-stroke victory came at the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship at Corales Golf Club in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic over Keith Mitchell. Garnett, 34, is on the Callaway endorsement staff and notches for them the second win of the season for the Rogue driver.

Match Play Ball & Club Counts: Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x were played by 45 in the field of 64 while Callaway Chrome Soft/Chrome Soft X could claim 10. Titleist also led the hybrid category with 12 and sets of irons with 19. Approach-sand-lob wedge category went to Titleist’s Vokey Design with 75 and their Scotty Cameron putters were number one with 24. TaylorMade to no one’s surprise extended its run as the favorite choice on Tour in drivers with their M3 or M4 models played by 21 competitors versus 15 for both Callaway and Titleist plus six for Ping.

Corales Putacana Championship: Titleist golf balls were played by 105 of the 132 in the field with Callaway Chrome Soft/Chrome Soft X played by 13. Titleist was top choice in hybrids with 24 and in sets of irons at 37. Vokey Design Wedges were the most played and topped the approach, sand and lob wedge category as did Scotty Cameron in the putter category.

Sure Out Update: Priced at $120 the Sure Out wedge from Callaway has been a popular choice for golfers and now they are added 56° and 60° lofts and two premium shafts to the mix. Sure Out has a wide sole and high bounce for shots around the green from bunkers and long grass.

Lynx Golf: A resurgent Lynx Golf, formerly a premium standalone brand and then an inhouse Golfsmith brand, is coming to the U.S. with the demise of Golfsmith. Presently being marketed in Europe the potential in this country was investigated and the clubs debuted at the PGA Merchandise Show last January. Retail is expected to start in April.
