So you go into the final round at one over par, 16 shots off the lead, and finish the day at 11 under. That’s a 12 under par round, a 58, and that’s what veteran Jim Furyk did in the final round of the Travelers Championship on Sunday.
He didn’t win, Scotsman Russel Knox did and Furyk finished T5, but Furyk did set the record for the lowest round in PGA Tour history. The 10 birdie and one eagle performance by Furyk wasn’t his first super low score since he already was a member of the ’59 club’ after shooting that number at the BMW Championship in 2013. The winner of the U.S. Open in 2003 missed only one fairway on Sunday, hit 18 greens and needed only 24 putts.
Furyk who lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. and has 14 wins on Tour in addition to his U.S. Open is a Callaway Golf staffer.

The Travelers winner Knox, who is a resident of Jacksonville Beach close to where Furyk lives, came from three behind on Sunday. Heightening the drama he managed to get up and down from the right front bunker on the 72nd green to beat out 49-year old Jerry Kelly by one stroke and take home the winner’s check of $1.188 million. His only other PGA Tour title was last November’s WGC-HSBC Champions.
Knox is on the Srixon/Cleveland Golf staff but his driver of choice is the TaylorMade Golf M2 model driver set at 10.5 degrees loft (Aldila Tour Blue 65 TX shaft) which he used to hit two-thirds of the fairways over the 72 holes–6 of 14 on Sunday. He averaged 295.5 off the tee while hitting almost 80 percent of the greens in regulation.
At the other end of the bag, putting with the SeeMore FGP Mini Giant putter, he was 8th in field with 1.684 putts per green in regulation.
