The weather turned cold for the Monday playoff but Canadian Mackenzie Hughes didn’t let it bother him as the Tour rookie won his first tournament, the RSM Classic at the Sea Island Club on St. Simons Island, Georgia.
A par on the third playoff hole, Sea Island’s par-3 number 17, from 18 feet just off the green was the winning stroke as Camilo Villegas, Blayne Barber and Henrik Norlander all missed for par. Billy Horschel had been eliminated Sunday on the first playoff hole and after two playoff holes play was stopped due to darkness. This was only Hughes’ ninth start in a PGA Tour event and a wire-to- wire win, the first by a rookie in 20 years.
Using all Ping equipment Hughes was effective with a driving iron, the Rapture D.I. 2- iron which has tungsten weighting for a high M.O.I. in a head of its size. The weighting combined with a wider sole make it easier to hit than a conventional 2-iron. It is shafted with an Aldila Tour Green 105-x.
His driver is the Ping G LS Tec 9-degree loft model with the LS standing for low spin. The adjustable hosel is set at 10.5 degrees. All G drivers make use of the exoskeleton on the crown, inspired by the structure of a dragon fly’s wing, with a weight saving of 8 grams that helps push the center of gravity lower in the head and back. This helps produce a high launch/low spin trajectory. Hughes plays an Aldila Rogue Silver 60-X shaft of 45.25 inches length.
