The Ultimate Golf Gear Test: Scotland
For many golfers located above the Mason Dixon line, golf in cool, rainy, and windy weather is a fact of life. Having good rain gear and a waterproof golf bag is almost a must. In Scotland, at the “Home of Golf” it is expected that you will be playing in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. Scotland sits just south of Norway and Iceland along the North Sea, the North Atlantic and The Irish Sea.
“There are two seasons in Scotland. June and winter. In Scotland, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.” Noted Billy Connolly, comedian, and actor. The wrong clothes on a golf course in Scotland will surely ruin what could be an amazing experience.
As the saying goes, we chose wisely with both our golf bags and outerwear from Sun Mountain on our recent excursion to play many of the British Open venues on one trip: Cirque waterproof lightweight Sun Mountain jackets & rain pants, and the Sun Mountain 3.5 LS Lightweight Stand Bags with 9 pockets for extra storage.
Knowing we would be using caddies on all courses on the trip, these lightweight performance bags supplied extra storage for weather gear, extra gloves and had a great umbrella connector as well. The lightweight outerwear and bags also kept our travel bag weight down to avoid international luggage charges, which can be steep if you are overweight.
The trip was epic in every way and the gear from Sun Mountain performed above and beyond expectations and garnished positive comments by our caddies and other golfers on the trip.
The Cirque Rain Gear
The first and most noticeable feature about the Cirque jacket and Cirque pants was the wearability. They were lightweight, flexible, sized perfectly and performed perfectly. Sleeve cuts were the right length making for no obstruction from overhanging. Because of the garments flex design, there was never any pulling, gathering, or full movement obstructions, wet or dry.
Without going into all the tech terms, here is the bottom line: In light rain, mist, driving rain in wind (we had it all), we remained 100% bone dry and comfortable through it all.
With 50-degree temps we were never cold or had any issues with moisture from walking about 7-8 miles a day on and off courses. After the first round, we pretty much played all our golf in Scotland in the Cirque gear. With a light layer on top & shorts underneath, it was perfect.
The Sun Mountain 3.5 LS Lightweight Stand Bag
I am not sure that I ever in my life played out of such a compact bag with so much storage. Almost every caddy on the trip commented on how light the bags were, how easy they were to carry, and how well the stands worked.
One of the best features with the bags were the zippers; they opened and closed with ease and had no issues with leaking. Even though these Sun Mountain bags are not technically waterproof they performed very much like it, even in driving rain. Everything fit in bag nicely without bulging or straining, and they were strikingly attractive, yielding several compliments from other golfers.
